Canadians win six individual medals at 2025 NCAA Division I Swimming Championships

Canadians won six individual medals this past weekend at the 2025 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Washington. Canadian Olympic silver medalist Joshua Liendo of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal in the men’s 100 metre freestyle and 100 metre butterfly, and silver in the men’s 50 metre freestyle. Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 100 metre butterfly and bronze in the men’s 200 metre butterfly. Tristan Jankovics of Guelph, Ontario won silver in the men’s 400 metre individual medley.

Liendo won silver in the men’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In Washington this past weekend, he had a winning time in the men’s 100 metre freestyle of 39.99 seconds and a winning time in the men’s 100 metre butterfly of 43.06 seconds. Liendo, a University of Florida student, also had a 50 metre freestyle swim time of 18.23 seconds, which was only behind Jordan Crooks of Cayman Islands. In representing the University of Tennessee, Crooks had a time of 17.91 seconds.

Kharun won bronze in the men’s 100 metre butterfly and men’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. At the 2025 NCAA Division I Swimming Championship, he posted a second place time in the men’s 100 metre butterfly of 43.43 seconds. Kharun, an Arizona State student, also had a 200 metre butterfly swim time of 1:38.74. He finished behind Americans Luca Urlando of the University of Georgia (1:36.43) and Dare Rose of University of California (1:38.04).

Jankovics of Ohio State had a second place time of 3:34.98. He was only behind American Rex Maurer of the University of Texas, who had a time of 3:34.00. The medals for Liendo, Kharun and Jankovics will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
