Canada wins the Under-18 World Hockey Championship for a fourth time

Team Canada won the gold medal at the World Under-18 Hockey Championship for a fourth time on Thursday. From the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, Canada defeated Russia 4-3 in the gold medal game.

Shane Wright of Burlington, Ontario led Team Canada in scoring with three points as he had two goals and one assist. Wright was one of two players for Team Canada with a multi-point game. Regina Pats center Connor Bedard of North Vancouver, British Columbia  had one goal and one assist for two points. The other Canadian goal scorers were Brennan Othmann of Scarborough, Ontario, and Kamloops Blazers center Logan Stankoven of Kamloops, British Columbia.

This was the first International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Men’s Hockey championship since 2019. The 2020 World Under-18 Men’s Hockey Championship was to take place in Plymouth and Ann Arbor Michigan, but was cancelled because of coronavirus.

Canada previously won the World Under-18 Men’s Hockey Championship in 2003, 2008, and 2013. In 2003, Canada beat Slovakia 3-0 in the gold medal game in Yaroslavl, Russia. In 2008, Canada beat Russia 8-0 in the gold medal game in Kazan, Russia. In 2013, Canada beat the United States 3-2 in the gold medal game in Sochi, Russia.

This was the first time since 2003 that the United States did not win a medal at the World Under-18 Men’s Hockey Championship. In the bronze medal game, Sweden beat Finland 8-0.
