Canada wins gold medal in women’s hockey at the 2023 Winter Universiade

Team Canada won the gold medal on Saturday in women’s hockey at the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York. The Canadian team defeated Japan 5-0 in the gold medal game.

University of New Brunswick goaltender Kendra Woodland of Kamloops, British Columbia made 12 saves for the shutout. The Canadian goal scorers were University of Montreal forward Audrey-Anne Veillette of Drummondville, Quebec, University of Toronto forward Celine Frappier of Tecumseh, Ontario, Nipissing University forward Maria Dominico of North Bay, Ontario, McGill University defenseman Elizabeth Mura of Calgary, Alberta and St. Francis Xavier University forward Maggy Burbidge of Falmouth, Nova Scotia. Veillette and Frappier had multi-point games as they each had one goal and one assist for two points. In the bronze medal game in women’s hockey, Czechia beat Slovakia 3-1.

In men’s hockey, Canada will play the United States in the gold medal game. In the semifinal on Saturday, Canada beat Kazakhstan 4-1. University of Quebec Trois Rivieres center Simon Lafrance of St. Eustache, Quebec led Canada in scoring with three assists. Queen’s University right winger Jonathan Yantsis of Markham, Ontario also had a multi-point game as he had two goals. The other Canadian goal scorers were University of Calgary defenseman Noah King of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and University of Manitoba right winger Brett Davis of Oakbank, Manitoba.

In the medal standings, Canada now has 12 medals (five gold, one silver and six bronze). They are in seventh place in the overall medal standings.
