Canada wins gold in women’s eights at 2024 Rowing World Cup in Switzerland

Team Canada has won the gold medal in the women’s eights Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. The win for the Canadian team is mighty significant as it came just two months before the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The Canadian team was comprised of Canadian Olympic gold medalists Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski of Montreal, Quebec, Sydney Payne of Toronto, Ontario, and coxswain Kristen Kit of St. Catharines, Ontario, and Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Cailiegh Filmer of Victoria, British Columbia, and Jessica Sevick of Victoria, Maya Meschkuleit of Mississauga, Ontario, Kristen Siermachesky of New Liskeard, Ontario, Kristina Walker of Coquitlam, British Columbia, and Abigail Dent of Kenora, Ontario. Gruchalla-Wesierski, Payne and Kit won a gold medal for Canada in the women’s eights at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. Filmer won the bronze medal for Canada in the women’s coxless pairs at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 with Hillary Janssens of Surrey, British Columbia.

In the women’s eights on Sunday, Canada posted a winning time of 6:04.47. Great Britain won the silver medal with a time of 6:05.57. The United States won the bronze medal with a time of 6:08.77. Canada reached the podium by 7.89 seconds as Australia finished in fourth place with a time of 6:12.36.
