Canada wins 15 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday

Team Canada had a 15 medal performance on Monday at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Of the 15 medals were three gold medals. World champion Christa Deguchi of Lethbridge, Alberta won the gold medal in the women’s 57 kilogram judo division, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Maude Charron of Sainte-Luce, Quebec won the gold medal in the 64 kilogram weightlifting, and world champion Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal in the women’s 200 metre individual medley.

In the women’s 64 kilogram weightlifting, Charron lifted 231 kilograms, a Commonwealth Games record. She lifted 101 kilograms in the snatch and 130 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Sarah Maureen Cochrane of Australia won the silver medal with a total lift of 216 kilograms and Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf of Nigeria won the bronze medal with a total lift of 212 kilograms.

In the women’s 57 kilogram judo, Deguchi beat silver medalist Acelya Toprak of England in the gold medal match. Christianne Legentil of Mauritius and Malin Wilson of Scotland shared the bronze medal. En route to the final, Deguchi also beat Suchika Tariyal of India in the quarterfinals and Lele Nairne of England in the semifinals.

In the women’s 200 metre individual medley swimming, McIntosh had a winning time of 2:08.70. Kaylee McKeown of Australia won the silver medal with a time of 2:09.52. Abbie Wood of England won the bronze medal with a time of 2:10.68.

Canada’s five silver medals came in gymnastics, judo, swimming and weightlifting. Felix Dolci of Saint-Eustache, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s floor gymnastics. Laurie Denommee of Saint-Eustache won the silver medal in the women’s vault gymnastics. Kelly Deguchi of Lethbridge, Alberta won the silver medal in the women’s 52 kilogram judo division. Kylie Masse of Windsor, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s 200 metre backstroke swimming. Alexis Ashworth of Regina, Saskatchewan won the silver medal in the women’s 71 kilogram weightlifting.

Canada’s seven bronze medals came in weightlifting, gymnastics, cycling and swimming. The seven Canadian bronze medalists were Nicolas Vachon of Saint-Jerome, Quebec (men’s 81 kilogram weightlifting), Jayson Rampersad of Mississauga, Ontario (men’s pommel horse gymnastics), Chris Kaji of Vancouver, British Columbia (men’s rings gymnastics), Maggie Coles-Lyster of Maple Ridge, British Columbia (women’s scratch cycling), Canadian Olympic gold medalist Kelsey Mitchell of Brandon, Manitoba (women’s keirin), Camille Berube of Gatineau, Quebec (women’s 100 metre breaststroke for athletes with limited use in their legs), and Javier Acevedo of Scarbrorough, Ontario (men’s 50 metre backstroke).

Canada now has 33 medals (six gold medals, 11 silver medals and 17 bronze medals). They are behind Australia (71 medals) and England (54 medals).
