Canadians swept the podium for the second time ever in World Cup women’s ski cross history on Saturday. The Canadian sweep happened in a race in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, as Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marielle Thompson of North Vancouver, British Columbia won the gold medal, Canadian Olympic silver medalist Brittany Phelan of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won the silver medal, and India Sherret of Cranbrook, British Columbia won the bronze medal.
In the women’s ski cross event in Veysonnaz, Thompson, Phelan, and Sherret won the first, second and fourth quarterfinals respectively. Thompson and Phelan finished first and second in the first semifinal heat, while Sherret won the second semifinal heat. The only other skier who qualified for the women’s big final was Marielle Berger Sabbatel of France.
The first time Canada swept the podium in women’s ski cross came on March 12, 2010. Canadian Olympic gold medalists Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, British Columbia and Ashleigh McIvor of Vancouver, British Columbia won gold and silver respectively, while Danielle Poleschuk of Winnipeg, Manitoba won bronze.
In the Women’s World Cup women’s ski cross standings, Thompson leads with 932 points. Phelan is third with 774 points, and Sherret is seventh with 489 points. Berger Sabbatel is second with 860 points.
Thompson has now won 30 World Cup gold medals and 66 World Cup medals overall. Phelan has now won 18 World Cup medals (one gold medal, nine silver medals and eight bronze medals), and Sherret has now won four World Cup medals. Sherret previously won gold in Alleghe, Italy on February 2, 2024, bronze in Idre Fjall, Sweden on January 13, 2018, and bronze in Val Thorens, France on December 6, 2019.
McIvor won the gold medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Thompson won the gold medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Serwa won the gold medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Phelan won the silver medal for Canada in women’s ski cross at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The medals for Thompson, Phelan and Sherret will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
