Team Canada are in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Davis Cup. On Sunday, Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario recorded the key victory in a 6-0, 7-5 win over Daniel Evans of Great Britain. Heading into Sunday’s Davis Cup action, Canada did not need to beat Great Britain. All they needed to do was win one of only three matches. Shapovalov won the first of the day, meaning the second singles match and doubles match later in the day in Manchester were exhibition contests as Canada clinched first place in Group D.

Shapovalov’s win took one hour and 21 minutes. Shapovalov was the better server, as he had six aces compared to two for Evans. Shapovalov also broke Evans four times in five opportunities.

Shapovalov had a great week of tennis. He won all three of his matches. Shapovalov also beat Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 7-5, 6-3, and Otto Virtanen of Finland 6-2, 6-3 in Group D action. However, due to the fact the Davis Cup is not included in the world rankings, Shapovalov actually had his world ranking drop from 100th to 101st.

This was Shapovalov’s third win in five matches against Evans. Shapovalov also beat Evans 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of Miami in 2019, and 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of Vienna in 2022. Canada will be joined in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup in Spain in November with the United States, Argentina, Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Spain, and Germany.
