Canada qualifies for the quarterfinals of the 2020 ATP Cup

Team Canada is in the quarterfinals of the 2020 ATP Cup from Australia. On Tuesday, Canada defeated Germany two matches to one from Brisbane. As a result, the Canadians placed second in Pool F and were one of the two second place teams to advance to the knockout stage.

In Canada’s win over Germany, Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario came up huge as he won singles and doubles. His singles win came over Alexander Zverev by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Then he teamed up with Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec to beat Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies by a score of 6-3, 7-6. Auger-Aliassime had lost his singles match to open the rubber against Germany. He was beaten 6-1, 6-4 to Jan-Lennard Struff.

Earlier in the tournament, Canada swept Greece three matches to zero and then lost three matches to zero to the host Australians. Canada was one of six nations in the tournament to win two of their three ties. The other nations were Belgium, South Africa, Japan, Italy and Croatia. Belgium was the only nation of the six to have a match record of six wins and three losses. The other five nations were at five wins and four losses. Then the next tie breaker was winning percentage in sets, which Canada was better than South Africa, Japan, Italy and Croatia, as they won 12 of 20 sets for a winning percentage of .600.

Canada’s quarterfinal opponent is Serbia in Sydney on Friday. The other quarterfinals have Great Britain versus Australia, Argentina versus Russia and Spain versus Belgium.
