Team Canada opened with a victory on Saturday in the first game of the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Geneva, Switzerland. The Canadian team comprised of Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer, Alberta, and Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island defeated the German duo of Pia-Lisa Schoell and Klaudius Harsch by a score of 9-3.
Team Canada was in control of the game from the start. They notched two points with the hammer in the first end, and that was followed by a steal of one in the second end, and then a steal of two more points in the third end, to take a 5-0 lead.
After Germany got on the scoreboard with a deuce in the fourth end, Canada generated a four-point lead with a 6-2 advantage after five ends. Then after Germany could not score more than one point with the hammer in the sixth end, a three-point end for Canada in the seventh end, gave Canada a 9-3 win. Gallant curled 92% and Peterman curled 89%. When it came to takeouts, Gallant curled 96%.
Three countries won two games on Saturday. They were Italy, Denmark and Switzerland. Canada will play two games on Sunday. They have Spain in the morning session, and then Turkey in the evening session.
