Team Canada has moved another step forward from qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup of Soccer in Qatar. On Sunday from Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada beat the United States 2-0.
The Canadian goal scorers were Cyle Larin of Brampton, Ontario, and Sam Adekugbe of Calgary, Alberta. Larin scored in the seventh minute and Adekugbe scored in the fifth minute of extra time in the second half.
With the win, Canada leads the CONCACAF Qualifying standings as they have a record of six wins and four draws for 22 points. The United States and Mexico are tied for second place with 18 points each. Panama is in fourth place with 17 points and Costa Rica is in fifth place with 13 points. The top three teams from CONCACAF advance to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the fourth place team advancing to a second chance qualifier.
Canada has four more games left in CONCACAF qualifying. They play in El Salvador on Wednesday, in Costa Rica on March 24, hosting Jamaica on March 27 and then in Panama on March 30.
Canada is 11-18-11 all-time against the United States in international soccer. However, the win over the United States on Sunday was only Canada’s second win over the United States since 1985. The other Canadian win over that time period was a 2-0 victory in the CONCACAF Nations League on October 15, 2019.
