Team Canada has improved to a perfect record of three wins and zero losses at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. With the win on Sunday, they won Pool B, and have advanced to the semifinals, where they will face Chile on Wednesday.
In the Canadian win, the Canadian goal scorers were Matthew Sarmento of Vancouver, British Columbia in the seventh minute, Sean Michael Davis of Burnaby, British Columbia in the 30th minute, Gordon Johnston of Vancouver, British Columbia in the 31st minute, and James Kirkpatrick of Victoria, British Columbia in the 44th minute. Ethan McTavish of Vancouver had the shutout.
Canada has now outscored their opponents 8-1 after three games. McTavish now has two shutouts, as he also blanked Brazil 2-0 on October 25.
Canada’s semifinal opponent Chile, had a Pool A record of two wins and one loss. They beat Peru 15-0 on October 25, and Mexico 5-0 on October 29, and lost to Argentina 3-1 on October 27.
Argentina was undefeated in Pool A. In addition to beating Chile, they beat Mexico 10-1, and Peru 22-0. Argentina’s semifinal opponent is the United States. The Americans beat Trinidad and Tobago 6-1 and Brazil 5-1, and lost to Canada 2-1. The winner of the 2023 Pan American Games in men’s field hockey will represent the Americas at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
