Canada wins seven medals at World Cup short track speed skating event in Montreal

Team Canada won seven medals over the last two days at a World Cup short track speed skating event in Montreal, Quebec. This came after Canada won five medals at a World Cup short track speed skating event in Montreal from October 21-22. Overall, Canada won three gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals.

Canada’s three gold medals came in individual events on Saturday. In the men’s 500 metres, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jordan Pierre-Gilles of Sherbrooke, Quebec had a winning time of Montreal of 40.349 seconds. Shaolin Liu of China won the silver medal with a time of 40.42 seconds. Xiaojun Lin of China won the bronze medal with a time of 40.58 seconds. Pierre-Gilles, who won the gold medal in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, reached the podium by 30.984 seconds over fellow Canadian Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec, who had a fourth place time of 1:11.333. In the World Cup standings in the men’s 500 metres, Pierre-Gilles is in second with 108 points. Shaoang Liu of China leads with 150 points.

In the women’s 500 metres, Rikki Doak of Fredericton, New Brunswick won the gold medal with a time of 42.408 seconds. Selma Poutsma of the Netherlands won the silver medal with a time of 42.734 seconds. Martina Valcepina of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 45.877 seconds. Doak reached the podium by 21.323 seconds over Kamila Stormowska of Poland, who had a fourth place time of 1:03.731. In the World Cup standings in the women’s 500 metres, Doak and Poutsma are tied for the lead with 160 points.

In the men’s 1500 metres, William Dandjinou of Sherbrooke won the gold medal with a time of 2:21.780. Daeheon Hwang of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 2:21.809. Gun Woo Kim of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 2:21.918. Dandjinlou reached the podium by 0.379 seconds. Jens van ‘T Wout of the Netherlands finished in fourth place with a time of 2:22.159. In the men’s 1500 metres on Sunday, Dubois, another Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, won the bronze medal with a time of 2:20.575. Gun Woo Kim of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:20.294. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 2:20.406. Dubois reached the podium by 0.156 seconds over Pascal Dion of Montreal, Quebec, who had a fourth place time of 2:20.731. In the World Cup standings in the men’s 1500 metres, Dubois is in sixth place with 110 points and Dandjinou is in eighth place with 100 points. The World Cup leader is Kim with 180 points.

In the women’s 1500 metres, Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec won the bronze medal with a time of 2:34.951 on Saturday. Gilli Kim of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:34.588. Kristen Santos-Griswold of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:34.829. Blais reached the podium by 0.401 seconds over fellow Canadian Courtney-Lee Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick, who had a fourth place time of 2:35.352. In the World Cup standings in the women’s 1500 metres, Blais is in seventh place with 114 points. Kim leads with 305 points.

In the women’s 1000 metres on Sunday, Blais won the silver medal with a time of 1:31.471. Whimin Seo of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:31.288. Jiyun Park of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 1:31.505. Blais reached the podium by 14.733 seconds over Michelle Velzeboer of the Netherlands, who had a fourth place time of 1:46.244. In the World Cup women’s 1000 metre standings, Blais is in fifth place with 131 points. Seo leads with 239 points.

In the men’s 5000 metre relay on Sunday, Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Dandjinou, Dubois and Pierre-Gilles had a second place time of 7:03.875. China won the gold medal with a time of 7:03.468. Kazakhstan won the bronze medal with a time of 7:05.352. In the World Cup standings, Canada leads with 180 points and China is second with 160 points. The medals for Roussel, Dandjinou, Dubois, Pierre-Gilles, Blais, and Doak will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
