Camryn Rogers wins silver in women’s hammer throw at World Championships

Camryn Rogers of Richmond, British Columbia won the silver medal on Sunday in the women’s hammer throw at the 2022 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. It was Canada’s first medal of the championships so far, and in the process Rogers became the first Canadian woman ever to win a medal in a field event at the World Athletics Championships.

Rogers had a throw of 75.52 metres. Brooke Andersen of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 78.96 metres. Janee’ Kassanavoid of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 74.86 metres. Rogers reached the podium by 2.34 metres over Sara Fantini of Italy, who had a fourth place throw of 73.18 metres.

Canadian women have won two medals in field events at the Olympic Games. Ethel Catherwood of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan won gold in the women’s high jump at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, and Eva Dawes of Toronto, Ontario won bronze in the women’s high jump at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, a Canadian record was set in the men’s marathon on Sunday as Cameron Levins of Campbell River, British Columbia had a time of 2:07.09 as he finished fourth. On Monday, Django Lovett of Surrey, British Columbia is in the final of the men’s high jump.
