Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario won the opening event of the 2023 LPGA season. On Sunday from Orlando, Florida, she won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. Henderson shot a four-round score of -16 to beat England’s Charley Hull and Sweden’s Maja Stark by four strokes.
Henderson was -5 in the first round, -6 in the second round, -3 in the third round and -2 in the fourth round. After having a three stroke lead over American Nelly Korda and Nasa Hataoka of Japan on Saturday, Henderson did not need to be sensational on Sunday, just steady. She had three birdies and one bogey. She birdied the second, ninth and 15th holes, and bogeyed the sixth hole.
In a 2022 calendar season where Henderson was stunningly not the Bobbie Rosenfeld winner even though she won her second major title (lost to Canadian Olympic gold medalist and women’s hockey player Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec), Henderson had a sensational weekend where she was the most dominant player over 72 holes. The fact she played well under pressure on Sunday (did not record a bogey over the last 12 holes) is a testament of her consistency. This was Henderson’s 13th LPGA win. She has five more wins than Sandra Post of Oakville, Ontario, who is second on the list with eight wins.
