Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario won her 11th LPGA tournament on Sunday at the 2022 ShopRite LPGA Classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey. For the second time in her career, Henderson won in a playoff as she defeated American Lindsey Weaver-Wright to take the title.
For the first time in Henderson’s career, she won an event that was 54 holes (or in Henderson’s case on Sunday, 55 holes). All the other LPGA events Henderson has won has been a minimum of 72 holes.
During the tournament this weekend, Henderson had a first round score of four-under-par 67 on Friday, second round score of one-under-par 70 on Saturday, and third round score of seven-under-par 64 on Sunday. In the first round, Henderson had four birdies. She birdied the first, fifth, 10th and 13th holes. In the second round, Henderson had two birdies and one bogey. She birdied the third and 12th holes, and bogeyed the second hole.
In the third round, Henderson had five birdies and one eagle. She birdied the first, third, sixth, 12th and 18th holes, and eagled the ninth. Then in the playoff against Weaver-Wright, Henderson eagled the 18th hole, while Weaver-Wright only had a par. Henderson had a very impressive approach shot in the playoff which set up the eagle chance.
Six other golfers were in contention. Jodi Ewart Shadoff of England was alone in third place at -11. New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Switzerland’s Albane Valenzuela were tied for fourth at -10. While Japan’s Nasa Hataoka, and Americans Marina Alex and Brittany Lincicome were tied for sixth at -9. The only other time Henderson won in a playoff is when she beat Ko to win her only major, the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Seattle.
