Boston Bruins left winger Brad Marchand of Halifax, Nova Scotia notched his fifth career National Hockey League hat trick on Wednesday in a 5-1 Bruins win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Toronto Dominion Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Marchand has been red hot for the Bruins as of late, as he now has eight goals and one assist for nine points in his last four games.

Marchand scored the Bruins’s first two goals of the game. He scored at 14:43 of the first period from Curtis Lazar of Salmon Arm, British Columbia and Tomas Nosek to put the Bruins up 1-0. Then Marchand scored his second goal of the game just 15 seconds after his first goal from Canadian Olympic gold medalist Patrice Bergeron of L’Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec and Craig Smith to put the Bruins up 2-0. This tally turned out to be the game-winning goal. Bergeron won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Then at 7:10 of the second period, Marchand scored a shorthanded marker from John Moore and Bergeron to put the Bruins up 4-0. For Marchand, this was his second shorthanded goal of the season as he also scored one on December 9 in a 3-2 Bruins win over the Edmonton Oilers. Marchand’s prior hat tricks in his career came in an 8-0 Boston win over the Florida Panthers on December 23, 2011, in a 6-3 Bruins win over the Vancouver Canucks on March 13, 2017, in a 6-5 Bruins win over the Detroit Red Wings on March 6, 2018, and in a 7-5 Bruins win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 3, 2021.

On the season, Marchand has 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points in 28 games. He is a +6 with 51 penalty minutes, 14 power-play points, two shorthanded points, three game-winning goals, 91 shots on goal, three faceoff wins, 10 blocked shots, 42 hits, 19 takeaways, and 21 giveaways. The Bruins meanwhile are in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 42 points. They have a record of 20 wins, 11 regulation losses, and two losses in extra time.
