Andrew Longino wins gold in men’s halfpipe skiing at the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lausanne

Andrew Longino of Calgary, Alberta has won Canada’s first gold medal at the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. Longino won the gold medal in the men’s halfpipe skiing competition.

Longino was one of two Canadians to medal on Tuesday on the pipe. In men’s halfpipe snowboarding, Liam Brearley of Gravenhurst, Ontario won his second medal of the Youth Olympic Winter Games as he won the bronze medal. Brearley had previously won the silver medal in men’s slopestyle snowboarding on Monday.

In the men’s halfpipe skiing, Longino won the gold medal with a score of 94 points. He reached the podium by 18 points as Max McDonald of New Zealand finished in fourth place with a score of 76 points. Hunter Carey of the United States won the silver medal with 86 points and Luca Harrington of New Zealand won the bronze medal with 80.66 points.

In the men’s slopestyle snowboarding, Brearley won the bronze medal with a score of 82 points. He reached the podium by five points over fourth place finisher Hyun-Jun Lee of South Korea, who was in fourth place with 77 points. Ruka Hirano of Japan won the gold medal with 97.33 points and Kaishu Hirano of Japan won the silver medal with 95.66 points.

Canada now has six medals (one gold, two silver and three bronze). They are in 14th place in the total medal standings. Russia leads with 28 medals.
