Alysha Newman and Andre De Grasse win bronze at IAAF Diamond League Finals in Brussels

Alysha Newman of London, Ontario and Olympic silver medalist Andre De Grasse of Scarborough, Ontario each won the bronze medal on Tuesday at the International Association of Athletics Federation Diamond League Finals in Brussels, Belgium. Newman won bronze in the women’s pole vault and De Grasse won bronze in the men’s 200 metres.

Newman had a third place score of 4.77 points. Katerina Stefanidi of Greece won the gold medal with a score of 4.83 metres. Anzhelika Sidorova of the Authorised Neutral Athletes (Russia) won the silver medal with 4.83 metres. Stefanidi won the gold medal because she was clean up to 4.83 metres, while Sidorova had six failed attempts.

Newman won the bronze medal by .07 metres over fourth place finisher Katie Nageotte of the United States. Nageotte had a score of 4.7 metres,

De Grasse had a third place time of 19.87 seconds, which was a seasonal best. Noah Lyles of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 19.74 seconds. Ramil Guliyev of Turkey won the silver medal with a time of 19.86 seconds. De Grasse reached the podium by 0.13 seconds over fourth place finisher Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ontario,

De Grasse won three medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He won silver in the men’s 200 metres, bronze in the men’s 100 metres and bronze in the men’s 4×100 metre relay. The medals for Newman and De Grasse will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federation World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
