This weekend we are seeing a return of professional soccer in Germany as the Bundesliga is playing again, after not taking place since March 11 due to coronavirus. Among the players who are on the pitch is a Canadian, as Alphonso Davies was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and is currently a winger and left back for Bayern Munich.

Davies and Bayern Munich will play Sunday against Union Berlin. Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga with 55 points (17 wins, four regulation losses, and four losses in extra time).

A second-year player in German professional soccer, Davies has also represented Canada internationally since 2017. He has two goals for Bayern Munich in 27 games. Davies scored his first Bundesliga goal on March 17, 2019 in a 6-0 win over FSV Mainz 05. Ironically, Davies’s other goal in the Bundesliga also came against FSV Mainz 05 in a 6-1 win on August 31, 2019.

Davies, who plays for Canada internationally, also has six assists for Bayern Munich this season. Three assists have been in Bundesliga and three assists have been in the United European Football Association Champions League. Two of the assists came in a 3-1 Bayern Munich win over England’s Tottenham Hotspur on December 11, 2019.

Bayern Munich has nine more games this season to complete its schedule. They currently have one more point than Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings.
