Wyatt Johnston records third career NHL hat trick

Dallas Stars centre Wyatt Johnston of Toronto, Ontario recorded his third National Hockey League career hat trick on Sunday. He accomplished the feat in a 6-3 Stars win over the St. Louis Blues at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

All three of Johnston’s goals came on the power-play. His first goal came with two seconds left in the first period from defenseman Thomas Harley of Mississauga, Ontario and Roope Hintz to put the Stars up 3-2. Johnston then put the Stars up 5-2 from Matt Duchene of Haliburton, Ontario and Hintz at 9:14 of the third period, and then closed out the scoring from Harley and Hintz at 11:11 of the third period.

Johnston was one of three Canadians to score in the game. The other two were Mason Marchment of Uxbridge, Ontario and Duchene. Marchment, Duchene and Harley also had multi-point games as Marchment and Duchene each had one goal and one assist for two points, and Harley had two assists for two points.

In 2024-25, Johnston has 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points. He is a +7 with 12 penalty minutes, 19 power play points, three shorthanded points, two game-winning goals, 163 shots on goal, 37 faceoff wins, 30 blocked shots, 32 hits, 25 takeaways and 36 giveaways. Johnston’s first game-winning goal this season came on New Year’s Eve in a 4-2 Stars win over  the Buffalo Sabres. Johnston scored from Harley at 11:32 of the third period to put the Stars up 3-2. Johnston’s second game-winning goal this season came on January 28 in a 4-3 Dallas win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Johnston registered the hat trick from Hintz and Esa Lindell at the 20 second mark of overtime.

Johnston’s first NHL hat trick came on March 5, 2024 in a 7-6 Stars win over the San Jose Sharks. With the win over the Blues on Sunday, the Stars are in second place in the Central Division with 80 points.
