Toronto FC wins its first game of 2020 MLS is Back Tournament

Toronto FC has won its first game of the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Florida. In an all-Canadian matchup on Thursday, Toronto FC defeated the Montreal Impact 4-3.

It was a sensational contest for Toronto FC forward Ayo Akinola. The 20-year-old from Detroit, who played his youth soccer in Brampton, Ontario, registered a hat trick as he scored in the 25th, 37th, and 83rd minutes.

With the win, Toronto FC improves to one win and one draw. They previously tied D.C. United at two goals apiece this past Monday. It was the second straight loss for the Impact as they were defeated 1-0 by the New England Revolution on July 9.

Toronto FC is the only Canadian team to have won in the tournament to date. The Vancouver Whitecaps lost their opening game to the San Jose Earthquakes by a score of 4-3 on July 15.

The MLS is Back Tournament has been extremely controversial because it is taking place in the coronavirus epicenter of Florida. There have been 327, 241 total cases of coronavirus in Florida with 287, 288 active cases, and 4805 deaths. Meanwhile, FC Dallas and Nashville SC had to both pull out of the tournament due to 10 positive cases and nine positive cases of coronavirus respectively.
