Toronto FC clobbers D.C. United 5-1 in first round of 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs

Toronto FC won their first round game of the 2019 Major League Soccer playoffs on Saturday. At the BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, Toronto FC, who is the only Canadian team that qualified for the MLS postseason this year, defeated D.C. United 5-1.

Even though Toronto FC beat D.C. United by four goals, it was actually a very tight contest as the game was tied after the second half. Toronto was up 1-0 on a goal by Marky Delgado in the 32nd minute. D.C. United tied the game but did not get the equalizer until the third minute of extra time in the second half when Lucas Ariel Rodriguez notched the score at one goal apiece.

It was in extra time that Toronto FC was able to put together their most offense. Richie Laryea of Toronto, Ontario scored the game winning goal at the 93rd minute. He was followed by Jonathan Osorio of Toronto, Ontario, who scored twice in the 95th and 103rd minutes to put Toronto FC up 4-1. Toronto FC’s final goal of the game came in the first minute of extra time of extra time as Nick DeLeon scored in the 106th minute to put Toronto FC up 5-1.

Toronto FC will now play New York City FC in one of two Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday. The other Eastern Conference semifinal has Atlanta United FC playing the Philadelphia Union on Thursday.
