The Toronto FC are playoff bound in Major League Soccer. On Saturday, they became the first team in Major League Soccer this season to clinch a playoff spot when they beat the San Jose Earthquakes 4-0 at BMO Field in Toronto.
Toronto FC is currently in first place in the Eastern Conference with 59 points. They have nine more points than New York City FC, which is in second place with 50 points.
On Saturday, it was a strong game for Jozy Altidore, who scored twice and was named the MLS player of the week on Tuesday. Altidore becomes the third Toronto FC player this year to be named the MLS player of the week. Sebastian Giovinco won the award in week 21 and week 25 and Justin Morrow won the award in week 23. The other Toronto FC players who scored against the Earthquakes were Victor Vazquez and Jonathan Osorio of Toronto.
Toronto FC is now unbeaten in their last ten games. During that stretch they have a record of seven wins and three draws. Their last loss was July 1 when they lost 3-1 to FC Dallas. Never before has Toronto FC finished in first place in the Eastern Conference after the regular season. Last year, they finished in third place before advancing to the MLS Cup Final where they lost on penalty kicks to the Seattle Sounders.
