The Toronto Blue Jays have won their most impressive series of the 2022 Major League Baseball regular season. This past weekend, the Blue Jays beat the Angels 6-3 on Thursday, 4-3 on Friday, 6-5 on Saturday, and 11-10 on Sunday. In addition to the four-game sweep, the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 on Wednesday. Their five game-winning streak at the moment is the longest in Major League Baseball.
Reasons why the Blue Jays sweep over the Angels is so significant are because the Blue Jays sweep came on the road, was against a formidable Angels opponent that is in contention in the American League West, and because the heart of the Angels lineup is led by Shohei Ohtani of Oshu, Japan, the reigning American League MVP, who is generational player at the moment for his excellence in hitting and pitching.
On Thursday, the Blue Jays got home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of Montreal, Quebec, Danny Jansen and George Springer. On Friday, the Blue Jays had a quality start from Alek Manoah (two earned runs in six innings and nine strikeouts). Meanwhile Angels right fielder Juan Lagares had a key fielding error in the top of the ninth inning which led to the Blue Jays’ game-winning run. On Saturday, the Blue Jays had five doubles as a team, and scored five of their six runs from the seventh inning on. Then on Sunday, the Blue Jays came back from a 9-6 deficit to score three runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth inning. The Blue Jays offensive star was outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who had five runs batted in.
With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 27-20. Due to the change in the Major League Baseball playoff format, they are comfortably in a playoff spot.
