The Toronto Argonauts defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-24 on Saturday in the first ever Canadian Football League regular season game played in the province of Nova Scotia. A total of 10,886 fans attended Raymond Field in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, which is the home of the Acadia Axemen of Canadian USports.
With the win, the Argonauts improved to the .500 mark at two wins and two losses. The Roughriders meanwhile dropped to a record of four wins and two losses.
The game was very entertaining with the Argonauts winning the contest on a 50-yard pass interception return for a touchdown by Wynton McManis. At the time, the Roughriders were leading 24-22, but the pick six put the Argonauts up 28-24. A two-point conversion from Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to Brandon Banks closed out the scoring and put Toronto up 30-24.
Bethel-Thompson completed 26 of 37 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. The 2021 CFL East All-Star is the grandson of American Olympic gold medalist Wilbur Thompson (men’s shot put at the 1948 Olympic Games in London). This was a big weekend when it came to the shot put. The 2022 International Association of Athletics Federation World Championships in Eugene, Oregon started on Friday, with two Americans winning gold on the weekend. Ryan Crouser placed first in the men’s shot put and Chase Ealey winning gold in the women’s shot put.
