Three Canadians have advanced to round two of the 2022 French Open. They are the ninth seed on the men’s side, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec, the 17th seed on the women’s side, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario.

Auger-Aliassime’s win will be the most memorable among the three. That is because he came down from two sets to love to take the match on Sunday. This was the first time in Auger-Aliassime’s career he was down 2-0 and came back to win. The 21-year-old beat Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru 2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.

Fernandez meanwhile defeated Kristina Mladenovic of France, 6-0, 7-5. Andreescu defeated Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. It is interesting that Andreescu and Fernandez both bageled their opponents in one of the two sets they won to win their first round match.

In the second round, Auger-Aliassime will face another South American in Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Uruguay. On the women’s side, Andreescu will face Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, the 14th seed, in the second round. Andreescu beat Bencic, the reigning Olympic champion, 7-6, 7-5, in their only prior meeting, the semifinals of the 2019 United States Open. Fernandez meanwhile will play Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. Despite being unseeded, Siniakova has won two WTA titles–the 2017 Swedish Open and the 2017 Shenzhen Open.
