Three Canadian teams won on Thanksgiving Monday at the 2023 World Beach Volleyball Championships in Tlaxcala, Mexico. In women’s action. Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson of Toronto, Ontario defeated Barbora Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova of the Czech Republic 21-17, 24-22, and Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ontario and Molly McBain of Toronto defeated Allanis Navas and Maria Gonzalez of Puerto Rico 21-19, 21-12. In men’s action, Samuel Schachter and Daniel Dearing of Toronto defeated Mohamed Abicha and Oussama El Azhari of Morocco 21-19, 21-10.
With the win, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson won Pool D with a perfect record of three wins and zero losses. They have advanced to the round of 32 where they will face a lucky loser. In Monday’s win, Humana-Paredes led Canada with 20 points (19 attack points and one ace). Wilkerson had 18 points (nine attack points, eight blocks and one ace).
Pavan and McBain improved to a record of one win and two losses, and finished in third place in Group H. They will next face Ariana Vilela and Karelys Ortiz of Ecuador in the lucky loser round. In Pavan and McBain’s win over Navas and Gonzalez, Pavan had 21 points (19 attack points and two aces). McBain had 16 points (12 attack points and four aces).
Schachter and Dearing improved to a record of two wins and one loss, and in second place in Group L. In Monday’s win, Dearing had 17 points (15 attack points and two block points). Schachter had 14 points (12 attack points and two aces). Schachter and Dearing will next face Thomas Hodges and Zachery Schubert of Australia in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
