Three Canadian cowboys find themselves in second place after the first day of the 2024 Calgary Stampede. Layton Green of Millarville, Alberta is in second place in the saddle bronc, Wyatt Gleeson of Sundre, Alberta is in second place in the bull riding, and Scott Guenther of Provost, Alberta, is in second place in the steer wrestling. Meanwhile, Shane Smith of Wimborne, Alberta is in third place in the tie down roping.
In the saddle bronc, Green was actually tied for second place with Sage Newman of Melstone, Montana and Sterling Crawley of Stephenville, Texas. Newman, Crawley and Green all have 83.5 points. The day one winner was Riggin Smith of Holbrook, Idaho with 85 points.
In the bull riding, Gleeson had a score of 86 seconds. He was only behind Hayes Weight of Goshen, Utah with a score of 86.5 points. Mason Moody of Letcher, South Dakota finished in third place with a score of 85 points.
In the steer wrestling, Guenther had a second place time of 4.8 seconds. Dalton Massey of Hermiston, Oregon had the fastest time of 4.7 seconds. Don Payne of Stephenville, Texas had the third fastest time of five seconds.
In the tie down roping, Smith had a time of 7.7 seconds. Tuf Cooper of Decatur, Texas had a winning time of 7.3 seconds and Chance Thiessen of Tuttle, Oklahoma was in second place with 7.4 seconds.
Finally in the chuckwagon racing, Chad Fike of Cremona, Alberta had the fastest time on day one of the Rangeland Derby of 1:11.08. Jason Glass of High River, Alberta is in second place with a time of 1:11.58, and Rae Croteau Jr. of Rapid View, Saskatchewan is in third place with a time of 1:12.10.
