Canadian Olympic gold medalist Ted-Jan Bloemen of Calgary, Alberta won the bronze medal in the men’s 10 000 metres at the 2023 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands on Sunday. For Bloemen, it was his seventh medal in the history of the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships. He has one gold medal, four silver medals, and two bronze medals. Bloemen won the gold medal in the men’s 10 000 metres at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
In the men’s 10 000 metres on Sunday, Bloemen posted a third place time of 13:01.84. Davide Ghiotto of Italy won the gold medal with a time of 12:41.35. Jorrit Bergsma of the Netherlands won the silver medal with a time of 12:55.64. Bloemen reached the podium by 1.08 seconds over Partrick Roest of the Netherlands, who had a fourth place time of 13:02.92. Roest was clearly struggling in the last lap of the race.
The fact that Bloemen won a medal was a little surprising because he had a time of over 13 minutes. The last time a speed skater had a time of over 13 minutes and won a medal in the men’s 10 000m at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships was seven years ago in 2016 in Kolomna, Russia, when Erik Jan Koolman of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of 13:02.15.
