It was a terrific game for Canadian outside hitter Stephen Timothy Maar of Aurora, Ontario. Maar led Team Canada with 12 points, nine spikes and three blocks.
However even though Canada won on Saturday, they only won one of their first three matches of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League. They lost 26-24, 25-14, 25-19 to Russia on Friday and 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17 in four sets to Poland on Sunday.
Poland, France, Italy and the United States went undefeated this past weekend with a perfect record of three wins and zero losses. However only Poland and France picked up the maximum total of nine points for winning each of their matches in four sets or less. Italy and the United States each registered eight points as Italy needed five sets to beat Brazil and the United States needed five sets to beat Argentina.
Canada meanwhile sits in a tie for 10th place with Iran and Serbia. The top five teams and France qualify for the final round of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League from July 4 to 8. Ottawa will host three of Canada’s games against Australia, Germany and the United States from June 8-10.
