Steven Dubois wins Olympic silver in men’s 1500m short track speed skating

Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec has won Canada’s eighth medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Wednesday, Dubois won the silver medal in the men’s 1500 metre short track speed skating event.

Dubois posted a second place time of 2:09.254. Daeheon Hwang of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:09.219. Semen Elistratov of the Russian Olympic Committee won the bronze medal with a time of 2:09.267. Dubois earned a medal by 0.155 seconds over fourth place finisher Shaoang Liu of Hungary, who had a fourth place time of 2:09.409.

It was a very busy men’s 1500 metre short track final with 10 athletes participating. From the three semi-finals, the top two short track speed skaters from each semifinal advanced to the final, while four more short track speed skaters advanced due to penalties. In the final, Dubois got off to a slow start as he was in 10th for a period of time, before he passed eight other skaters to capture silver.

in other short track speed skating action, Canada reached the women’s 3000 metre A Final. They are alongside the Netherlands, China, and South Korea. The Canadian team consisted of Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Florence Brunelle of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Alyson Charles of Montreal, Quebec, and Courtney-Lee Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick.

Team Canada has now won one gold medal, two silver medals, and five bronze medals for eight medals overall. They are in fifth place in the overall medal standings behind the Russian Olympic Committee, Norway, Austria and Germany.
