Sophia Jensen wins World Cup canoeing silver in Montreal

Sophia Jensen of Edmonton, Alberta won a silver medal in a World Cup canoeing competition in Montreal, Quebec on Sunday. She placed second in a women’s C1 200 metre event.

Jensen had a time of 45.16 seconds. Liudmyla Luzon of Ukraine won the gold medal with a time of 44.68 seconds. Yarisledis Duboy of Cuba won the bronze medal with a time of 45.23 seconds. Jensen reached the podium by 0.48 seconds. Changwen Shuai of China finished in fourth place with a time of 45.64 seconds.

This was Jensen’s fifth career medal in an event with Olympic status on the World Cup stage. She has won three silver medals and two bronze medals. Jensen previously won the bronze medal in the women’s C1 200 metre World Cup event in Poznan, Poland in 2022, the bronze medal in the women’s C2 500 metres (with Julia Lilley-Osende of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) in Paris, France in 2023, silver in the women’s C1 200 metres in Szeged, Hungary in 2024, and silver in the women’s C1 200 metres in Brandenburg, Germany.

In addition to her five World Cup medals, Jensen has won three medals at the World Sprint Canoe Championships. Her World Cup silver medal in Montreal will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
