Sheriauna Haase of Toronto, Ontario delivered the most significant victory of her track and field career on Thursday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Haase won the gold medal in the women’s 100 metres for athletes with an arm amputation.
Haase, who only has one arm, won the gold medal with a personal best time of 12.23 seconds. It was a 1-2 Canadian finish as Chloe Dunbar of Newport, Nova Scotia won the silver medal with a time of 12.33 seconds, which was also a personal best. Anna Grimaldi of New Zealand won the bronze medal with a time of 12.46 seconds. Haase reached the podium by 0.27 seconds. Janani Wickranasingha of Sri Lanka finished in fourth place with a time of 12.5 seconds.
Team Canada won four more medals on Thursday. Julia Tunks of London, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s discus, Xavier Lusignan of Mansfield, Quebec won the bronze medal in the men’s 110 kilogram weightlifting, Etta Mae Love of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan won the bronze medal in the women’s 86 kilogram weightlifting, and George Quarcoo of Brantford, Ontario won the bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres for athletes with a visual impairment.
In other Canadian results, Ryan Bester of Hanover, Ontario and John Bezear of Kitchener, Ontario remain undefeated in men’s pairs lawn bowling after a win over Kenya. Canada is now at three wins and zero losses. They have a gigantic game against undefeated Scotland on Friday. Meanwhile, in men’s decathlon, Damian Warner of London, Ontario is the leader at the halfway point of the competition with 4353 points. However, Tejaswin Shankar of India is in second place with 4339 points.
Canada is third in the overall Commonwealth Games medal standings with 45 medals (15 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 18 bronze medals). Australia leads with 110 medals and England is second with 65 medals.
