Cara Gardner Morey of Hensall, Ontario will have a new job with the Vancouver Goldeneyes for the 2026-27 Professional Women’s Hockey League season. In the Goldeneyes’s first PWHL season, Gardner was the Goldeneyes general manager and now she is the Goldeneyes head coach according to thepwhl.com. With Gardner Morey’s new role change with the Goldeneyes, Vancouver will be hiring a new general manager. It is unprecedented in professional sports for a person to go from general manager to head coach.
Gardner Morey takes over from Brian Idalski, who was fired on June 1. In the Goldeneyes first season of the PWHL, they had a regular season record of nine wins, 14 regulation losses, three wins in extra time and four losses in extra time for 37 points overall. They were seven points back of the Ottawa Charge for a playoff spot.
Prior to joining the Goldeneyes, Gardner Morey was the head coach of the Princeton University Women’s Hockey Team. She held that role for eight seasons from 2017 to 2025.
Before coaching, Gardner Morey played with Brown University from 1997 to 2001. She also played one season with the London Devilettes of the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League (1996-97), one season with the Montreal Wingstar of the National Women’s Hockey League (2002-03), and one season with the Brampton Thunder of the NWHL (2003-04). In 40 NWHL games, she had four goals and 16 assists for 20 points.
