The Ottawa Senators have traded goaltender Matt Murray of Thunder Bay, Ontario to the Toronto Maple Leafs according to Luke Fox of Rogers Sportsnet on Monday. In addition to Murray, the Maple Leafs receive a third round draft pick in the 2023 National Hockey League Entry Draft and a seventh round draft pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The Senators receive future considerations and will pay for 25% of Murray’s contract as part of the trade. Murray is to earn $6.25 million in each of the next two seasons.
Murray is now joining his third NHL franchise. In addition to two seasons with the Senators, Murray spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2015 to 2020. While with the Penguins, he won back-to-back Stanley Cups in his first two NHL seasons in 2016 and 2017. In winning the Stanley Cup in 2017, Murray led all NHL goaltenders in playoff shutouts (three), and save percentage (.937). A year earlier, Murray led all NHL goalies in playoff wins with 15.
It was a struggle for Murray this past year. With the Senators in 2021-22, he had a record of five wins, 12 regulation losses and two losses in extra time, one shutout, a goals against average of 3.05 and a save percentage of .906. The Maple Leafs are clearly hoping to get the Murray from the Penguins than the one who was in Ottawa the last two years.
