The Ottawa Senators came away with a very memorable win on Saturday that will be remembered among members of the franchise and fans for a considerable period of time. That is because they upset the San Jose Sharks 6-2 at the Canadian Tire Centre.
The win is extremely memorable and significant for the Senators because they beat a Sharks team that included all-star defenseman Erik Karlsson. A five-time all-star with the Senators, Karlsson also won two Norris Trophies while playing with Ottawa, before being traded to San Jose on September 13, 2018.
In the game, Karlsson had a game high nine shots on net, but was a -2. Ironically, it was a strong game for former Sharks right winger Mikkel Boedker, who had one goal and three assists for four points and was a +3. Boedker was traded to the Senators in the offseason in the deal that saw Ottawa trade Mike Hoffman of Kitchener, Ontario to the Sharks on June 19, 2018. Hoffman was subsequently traded to the Florida Panthers.
Boedker was one of five Senators players to have a multi-point game. Magnus Paajarvi and Bobby Ryan each had one goal and one assist for two points and Zack Smith of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Thomas Chabot of Sainte-Marie, Quebec had two assists each.
The Senators are currently at 12 wins, 12 regulation losses and three losses in extra time for 27 points. They are currently five points back of the Boston Bruins for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
