Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the silver medal in a Diamond League women’s shot put event in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday. For Mitton it was her ninth Diamond League medal as she has now won one gold medal, six silver medals and two bronze medals in her career.
Mitton posted a throw of 19.98 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 20 metres. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.08 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 1.11 metres. Jiayuan Song of China finished in fourth place with a throw of 18.87 metres.
For Mitton it was her third Diamond League medal of the season. She won a silver medal in Shanghai, China on April 27 and a bronze medal in Rabat, Morocco on May 19. Also this spring Mitton set the Canadian women’s shot put record with a throw of 20.68 metres at the Throws U 2024 Series in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.
Mitton is in second place in the Diamond League standings with 25 points. Jackson is the current Diamond League leader with 30 points. There is only one more women’s shot put event in the Diamond League season. That will be in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 22. But before that, Mitton has the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris where she is a strong medal contender. The women’s shot put takes place on August 9 at 11:40 am MT.
