Sarah Mitton wins Diamond League shot put finals in Belgium

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the Diamond League Finals in women’s shot put on Friday in Brussels, Belgium. In the event which is also known as the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, Mitton won the event with a throw of 20.25 metres.

Chase Jackson of the United States won the silver medal with a throw of 19.9 metres. Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany, the reigning Olympic gold medalist from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.72 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.6 metres. Maddison-Lee Wesch of New Zealand, the reigning Olympic silver medalist,  finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.65 metres.

It has been quite the 2024 athletics season for Mitton. In the indoor season, she won all five events she participated in–at Windsor, Ontario, Val-de-Reuil, France, Toronto, Ontario, Nehvizdy, Czech Republic, and the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

That was followed by a silver medal in a Diamond League event in Suzhou, China on April 27, gold medal at an event in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania on May 11, bronze at a Diamond League event in Marrakech, Morocco on May 19, silver medal at a Diamond League event in Stockholm, Sweden on June 2, gold medal at the USA Track and Field New York City Grand Prix on June 9, gold medal at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational on June 13, silver medal a the Harry Jerome Track Classic in Burnaby, British Columbia on June 15, gold at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Montreal, Quebec on June 28, gold at the Canadian Track and Field League in Ottawa, Ontario on July 6, gold at the Ontario Championship in Toronto, Ontario in July 19, gold at events in Thum, Germany and Sondershausen, Germany on August 16 and 17 respectively, and bronze at a Diamond League event in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 22. The gold medal in Brussels will give Mitton confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
