Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won her second career Diamond League medal on Saturday in the women’s shot put. At the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzow, Poland, Mitton had a throw of 19.44 metres to take the bronze medal.
Chase Ealey of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 19.81 metres. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won the silver medal with a throw of 19.32 metres. Mitton reached the podium by .02 metres over Fanny Roos of Sweden, who finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.42 metres.
With the bronze medal, Mitton finished in third place in the Diamond League standings with 16 points. Chase Ealey of the United States finished in first place with 32 points and Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands was in second place with 20 points.
Mitton’s other podium performance in Diamond League action was a silver medal in Stockholm, Sweden on June 30. She also won the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England with a throw of 19.03 metres on August 3, and set the Canadian record in the women’s shot put with a throw of 20.33 metres in winning the gold medal at the 2022 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia on June 25. Mitton’s bronze medal in Poland will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
