Montreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault of Becancour, Quebec recorded his third National Hockey League shutout on Monday. He accomplished the feat in a 3-0 Canadiens win over the Edmonton Oilers at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.
Montembeault made 25 saves. He made eight saves in the first period, six saves in the second period, and 11 saves in the third period. Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia, who was playing in his 900th NHL career game, led the Oilers with five shots on goal.
Three Canadians scored for the Canadiens. They were right winger Brendan Gallagher of Edmonton, Alberta, defenseman Kaiden Guhle of Edmonton, and Jake Evans of Toronto, Ontario. Evans also led the Canadiens with two points as he had one goal and one assist.
With the win, Montembeault improved to a record of six wins, eight regulation losses, and one loss in extra time. He had a goals against average of 2.85, a save percentage of .906 and two shutouts. The other shutout this season came on October 9, as Montembeault made 48 saves in a 1-0 Canadiens win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Montembeault’s only other NHL shutout came on February 23, 2022 in a 4-0 Canadiens win over the Buffalo Sabres. With the win over the Oilers, the Canadiens improved to a record of seven wins, 10 regulation losses and two losses in extra time for 16 points. They are three points back of the Boston Bruins for a playoff spot.
