Ontario and Alberta record memorable baseball wins at 2022 Canada Games

The baseball competition made the headlines on Friday at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara Falls, Ontario with two notable semifinal games. First, Michael Yusypchuk of Edmonton, Alberta threw a no-hitter for Team Alberta in a 4-0 win over Team British Columbia. Then in the second semi-final, Team Ontario trounced Team Saskatchewan 22-4, setting the Canada Games record for most runs scored in a single game.

Ontario broke the record that was previously held by Team British Columbia. Interestingly, British Columbia set the record when they beat Nova Scotia 18-8 on Tuesday. Team Ontario third baseman Preston Barr of St. Joachim, Ontario set the Canada Games record for most runs batted in during a Canada Summer Games baseball game with six. He collected four hits in five at bats.

Yusypchuk only gave up one walk in seven innings of work. He also had seven strikeouts. Ontario will play Alberta for gold on Saturday.

The gold medal game was played in three team events on Friday. In female softball, British Columbia beat Quebec 10-0. In male soccer, Quebec beat Ontario 3-0. In female box lacrosse, Ontario beat British Columbia 2-1. In a previous gold medal game in a team event at the 2022 Canada Games, British Columbia beat Quebec 38-0 in women’s rugby sevens on Wednesday.

Ontario continues to lead the medal count with 84 medals. British Columbia is second with 66 medals, and Alberta is third with 61 medals.
