Nathan MacKinnon named NHL first star of the week

Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax, Nova Scotia was named the NHL’s first star of the week for the period between December 30, 2019 and January 5, 2020 on Monday. MacKinnon had three goals and five assists for eight points in three games.

A centre with the Colorado Avalanche, MacKinnon opened the week with two goals in a 7-4 Colorado loss to the Winnipeg Jets on New Year’s Eve. He then had one goal and three assists for four points in a 7-3 Colorado win over the St. Louis Blues on January 2 and then had two assists in a 5-2 Colorado win over the New Jersey Devils on January 4. In the three games, MacKinnon had three power play points, 18 shots on goal, one hit and 15 faceoff wins.

In 2019-20, MacKinnon has 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points in 43 games. He is a +2 with eight penalty minutes, 23 power play points, three game winning goals, 201 shots on goal, 235 faceoff wins, 19 blocked shots, 33 hits, 23 takeaways and 34 giveaways.

MacKinnon is also fourth in the NHL in goals, fifth in assists and third in points. He also leads the NHL in shots on goal.

The Avalanche have the second best record in the Central Division. With a record of 25 wins, 14 losses and four losses in extra time, they have 54 points and are five points back of the first place St. Louis Blues.
