The Montreal Canadiens have won the 2026 National Hockey League Heritage Classic. On Sunday night at the Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Canadiens defeated the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 2-1.
The Canadiens got goals from defensemen Kaiden Guhle of Edmonton, Alberta and 2025 Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson. Cole Caufield led the Canadiens in scoring as he had two assists for two points. Both of the Canadiens goals came in the second period. The Canadiens’s winning goaltender was Jacob Fowler, who made 33 saves for his fifth win of the season.
Fowler has sparkled so far this season for Montreal. He has a record of five wins and one loss with a goals against average of 1.79, save percentage of .924 and one shutout. The shutout came in a 1-0 Canadiens shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings on October 10.
This was the second time in franchise history that the Canadiens won the Heritage Classic. They previously beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton at the first Heritage Classic on November 22, 2003.
With the win, the Canadiens improved to a record of six wins, three regulation losses and two losses in extra time for 14 points. They are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division, but in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
