Mike Varga wins two medals at 2021 X Games

Mike Varga of Oshawa, Ontario has won two medals at the 2021 X Games in Riverside, California. On Wednesday, he won the bronze medal in Wendy’s BMX Park competition, and also won the gold medal for having the best trick.

This was the second time in Varga’s career he won a gold medal for the best trick. He also received the honour in 2019 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The 2021 X Games is taking place without spectators. In fact, on Wednesday, the competition took place at the home of Pat Casey of Yorba Linda, California according to Olivia Wilson of ESPN. Casey  finished second in the men’s BMX Park competition behind gold medalist Kevin Peraza of Tucson, Arizona. Despite being born in Arizona, Peraza has competed for Mexico and the United States internationally.

The X Games is taking place shortly before skateboarding is making its Olympic debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. In skateboarding at the Olympic Games, Canada is being represented by Andy Anderson of White Rock, British Columbia in the men’s park competition, and Matt Berger of Kamloops, British Columbia and Micky Papa of Burnaby, British Columbia in the men’s street skateboarding competition. None of Berger, Papa or Anderson are serious medal contenders. In BMX Cycling at the Olympic Games, Canada is being represented by James Palmer of Vancouver, British Columbia in the men’s race, and Drew Mechielsen of Surrey, British Columbia in the women’s race.
