McBean named Canada’s Chef de Mission at 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marnie McBean of Vancouver, British Columbia has been named Canada’s chef de mission for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. McBean won a gold medal in women’s pairs with Kathleen Heddle of Trail, British Columbia at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and in women’s sculls with Heddle at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

McBean also won a third Olympic gold medal in the women’s eights at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. That came with Kirsten Barnes and Jessica Monroe of Victoria, British Columbia, Shannon Crawford of Guelph, Ontario, Megan Delehanty of Edmonton, Alberta, Heddle, Brenda Taylor of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Lesley Thompson-Willie of London, Ontario and Kay Worthington of Toronto, Ontario. McBean also won a bronze medal in the women’s quadruple sculls at the 2006 Olympic Games in Atlanta with Heddle, Laryssa Biesenthal of Walkerton, Ontario and Diane O’Grady of North Bay, Ontario.

The 2020 Olympic Games will take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9. There are nine new sports added for the Olympic programme. They are baseball, softball, 3×3 basketball, BMX freestyle cycling, Madison cycling, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. With the added events, Canada is expected to send a large contingent of athletes. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Canada won 22 medals (four gold medals, three silver medals and 15 bronze medals).
