Dallas Stars goaltender Matt Murray of St. Albert, Alberta collected his first career National Hockey League shutout on Monday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-0 Dallas Stars win over the Minnesota Wild. Murray made 23 saves for the shutout.
Murray made 12 saves in the first period, nine saves in the second period, and only two saves in the third period. Brock Faber led the Wild with four shots on goal. Offensively for the Stars, Tyler Seguin of Brampton, Ontario led the Stars in scoring with two points (one goal and one assist).
It should be noted that this is not the same Matt Murray of Thunder Bay, Ontario, who won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a NHL goaltender in 2016 and 2017. From 2015 to 2023, that Matt Murray had 15 shutouts with the Penguins, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs. He is missing the majority of this season while recovering from bilateral hip surgery.
As for the Stars’s Matt Murray, this was only his fourth career NHL game over two seasons, and second NHL win. Murray previously made 19 saves in 21 shot attempts in a 5-2 Dallas win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 2. This was also Murray’s first NHL game this season.
With the victory, the Stars improved to a record of 23 wins, 11 regulation losses, and five losses in extra time for 51 points. They are in third place in the Central Division.
