Malindi Elmore sets Canadian record in the women’s marathon

Malindi Elmore of Kelowna, British Columbia broke the Canadian record in the women’s marathon on Sunday. Elmore posted a third place time of two hours, 24 minutes and 50 seconds in the 2020 Houston Marathon. The time was a surprise to many as Elmore is 39 years old.

Elmore broke the record previously set by Rachel Cliff of Vancouver, British Columbia. Cliff had a time of two hours, 26 minutes and 56 seconds in finishing 15th place in a women’s marathon in Nagoya, Japan on March 10, 2019.

In the Houston Marathon, Askale Merachi of Ethiopia won the gold medal with a time of two hours, 23 minutes and 29 seconds. Biruktayit Degefa Eshetu of Ethiopia won the silver medal with a time of two hours, 24 minutes and 47 seconds, Elmore reached the podium by four seconds over fourth place finisher Meseret Belete of Ethiopia, who had a fourth place time of two hours, 24 minutes and 54 seconds.

Ethiopia also had great success in the men’s marathon in Houston. Kelkile Gezahegn of Ethiopia won the gold medal with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 36 seconds. Bronsa Dida of Ethiopia won the silver medal with a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 37 seconds. Amanuel Mesel of Eritrea won the bronze medal with a time of two hours, 11 minutes and four seconds.
