Mackenzie Hughes wins 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship

Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario won his second career PGA tournament on Sunday. The 31-year-old who is based in Dundas, placed first at the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.

Hughes had a four-round score of -17 to beat Austria’s Sepp Straka in a two-hole playoff. In the final round, he posted a score of three-under-par 69. Hughes birdied the third, ninth, 10th, and 15th holes, and bogeyed the sixth hole.

This was Hughes’s second career PGA victory. He had his first PGA Tour win also in a playoff. At the 2016 RSM Classic at St. Simons, Georgia, Hughes posted a score of -17 to beat Americans Blayne Barber and Billy Horschel, along with Sweden’s Henrik Norlander and Chile’s Camilo Villegas in a three-hole playoff.

Hughes becomes the fourth Canadian to win a golf event in Jackson, Mississippi. The others were Dan Halldorson of Winnipeg, Manitoba (1986), Richard Zokol of Kitimat, British Columbia (1992), and Nick Taylor of Winnipeg (2014). Taylor meanwhile was the last Canadian to win on the PGA Tour. He won the 2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in northern California. This was the sixth last PGA tournament to take place before the PGA Tour postponed competitive golf for four months because of the coronavirus pandemic.
