Hughes is one of two Canadians in contention. Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ontario is tied for ninth at -7, and three strokes back of Hughes.
Hughes had a first round score of eight-under-par 63. He had nine birdies and one bogey. Hughes birdied the second, fourth, sixth, seventh, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the ninth hole. Hughes had a second round score of two-under-par 69. He had four birdies and two bogeys. Hughes birdied the fourth, sixth, 15th, and 16th holes, and bogeyed the third and 12th holes.
Silverman had a first round score of four-under-par 67. He had six birdies and two bogeys. Silverman birdied the third, fourth, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th holes, and bogeyed the fifth and 14th holes. Silverman had a second round score of three-under-par 68. He had four birdies and one bogey. Silverman birdied the 13th, 14th, 16th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the 10th hole.
There is a five-way tie for third. Those at -9 and one back are Americans Danny Walker, Harry Higgs, Nick Watney, Will Chandler and Davis Shore. Norman Xiong of the United States is alone in eighth at -8.
