Mackenzie Blackwood records eighth career NHL shutout

Mackenzie Blackwood of Thunder Bay, Ontario recorded his eighth career National Hockey League shutout on Wednesday. It came a day before his 25th birthday in a 3-0 Devils win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Blackwood made 25 saves at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. He made nine saves in the first period, five saves in the second period, and 11 saves in the third period.

Offensively for the Devils, New Jersey got goals from center Michael McLeod of Mississauga, Ontario, and Dawson Mercer of Carbonear, Newfoundland. Jesper Bratt led the Devils in scoring with two points, as he had one goal and one assist.

This was Blackwood’s second shutout of the 2021-22 NHL regular season. He previously made 42 saves in a 4-0 Devils win over the New York Islanders on November 11. On the season, Blackwood now has a record of five wins, three regulation losses, three losses in extra time, a goals against average of 2.81 and a save percentage of .913. All eight of Blackwood’s shutouts have been with the Devils.

With the win, the Devils improved to a record of 10 wins, nine regulation losses, and five losses in extra time for 25 points. They are in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, and four points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for a playoff spot.
